How to launch an English training program in the workplace: Part 2

In this two-part blog series, we’re sharing our best practices to design and launch an effective English training program for your team. Now that you’ve established what your organization needs and how you’ll measure the results, it’s time to consider the learning program itself in more detail.

At the core of every Voxy course is the understanding that English training is acquiring a new skill, not just studying a content area. This means that your English program should be designed in a way that allows employees to take what they’ve learned and actually use those skills in the real world. To do that, here are 10 key elements that every successful English program needs to include:

1. Perform a needs analysis
Just as you performed a needs analysis for your organization, it’s important to do a needs analysis for every employee to determine their starting proficiency level and measurable goals.

2. Resolve issues of space and time
Make sure that program managers and employees are on the same page in terms of when, where and for how long they are expected to practice English. This also means that arrangements may need to be made to create dedicated space and time for employees to learn in the office.

3. Personalize instruction
Every English learner is unique. We all have different starting proficiency levels, personal interests and goals. For an English learning program to be effective, it should be personalized to meet the needs of each individual learner.

4. Use a blended approach
We know that English learning is most effective when employees are given a combination of self-study courses online and live instruction with trained English teachers.

5. Provide real-world learning materials
Instead of using scripted, outdated learning materials, teach English with engaging materials that learners need to be able to apply their English skills in the real world.

6. Give employees access to learning tools
Make sure your employees have access to everything they need to learn English, including lessons using real-world content, vocabulary and grammar practice, and tools to track their own progress.

7. Offer authentic experiences
Your employees need to learn English from the kinds of real-world situations they’ll encounter at work. An effective language program in the workplace will include opportunities for employees to learn how to accomplish tasks that directly relate to their jobs.

8. Integrate language learning with daily activities
Incorporate language learning into the tasks your employees are already doing every day, like reading the news, posting on social media and sending emails.

9. Provide courses aligned to employees’ jobs
For employees that need specialized English practice to perform their jobs, learning programs need to include professional-level courses designed for their industry and job function.

10. Streamline reporting to make better decisions
When you have clear visibility into the progress, engagement and learning activities of your employees, you can make informed, cost-effective decisions to ensure the best program results.
