{"id":18854,"date":"2018-08-02T13:34:34","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T17:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/voxy.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/if-you-want-to-learn-a-language-its-time-to-stop-playing-games\/"},"modified":"2021-04-30T14:19:45","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T18:19:45","slug":"if-you-want-to-learn-a-language-its-time-to-stop-playing-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voxy.com\/es\/blog\/if-you-want-to-learn-a-language-its-time-to-stop-playing-games\/","title":{"rendered":"If You Want to Learn a Language, It&#8217;s Time to Stop Playing Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Games are fun, and people like them. \u00a0Whether it&#8217;s tennis, football, chess, poker, Fortnite, FIFA mobile, Shuffleboard, Jenga, Clue, or Candy Crush, there&#8217;s a game for nearly everyone. \u00a0As Mary Poppins once pointed out, turning a chore into a game can make it compelling and fun, which is perhaps why the education industry is so focused on \u00abgamification,\u00bb or creating learning activities from games. \u00a0Unfortunately, it sometimes takes more than a spoonful of sugar to get the outcomes we want. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.3102\/0034654315582065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis conducted a few years ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that games can be more effective for learning than non-game educational approaches, but they tend to work best for rote learning, and there is little evidence that they promote the acquisition of higher-order cognitive skills. \u00a0Indeed, some topics are better suited to games than others. Take, for example, touch typing. It\u2019s the perfect thing to teach with a game. Learning the position of the keys and which fingers go where is straightforward and can be quickly memorized. \u00a0Basic gaming mechanics can reward learners for choosing the right letters and penalize them for choosing the wrong ones. Whether they are using the keyboard to launch rockets, grow flowers, or move balls through a maze, a game is a great way to teach someone to type.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language learning, on the other hand, is a terrible candidate for a simple game. \u00a0Many of the things that make playing a game fun are the same factors that make language learning hard. \u00a0Perhaps a table with a few examples would make this clear:<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody><!-- Header Row --><\/p>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 50%;\">\n<p style=\"background-color: #1bdcdd; font-size: 20px; color: #fff;\" align=\"center\"><b>GAMES<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%;\">\n<p style=\"background-color: #1bdcdd; font-size: 20px; color: #fff;\" align=\"center\"><b>LANGUAGE LEARNING<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<p><!-- Row 1 --><\/p>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; padding-right: 4%; font-size: 19px;\">Players can quickly figure out the general rules of a game, even if some specifics are hard to master.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; padding-right: 4%; font-size: 19px;\">It can take a lifetime to figure out the rules of a new language, and months to understand basic constructions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<p><!-- Row 2 --><\/p>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; padding-right: 4%; font-size: 19px;\">Players quickly feel like they are making progress in games, and there are clear milestones and rewards for improvement.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; padding-right: 4%; font-size: 19px;\">Learners can spend years at the same proficiency level of a new language, and it\u2019s difficult to notice incremental progress.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<p><!-- Row 3 --><\/p>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; padding-right: 4%; font-size: 19px;\">Rewards are built into games, and even novice players of more difficult games (e.g., chess or golf) can quickly feel the thrill of a well-executed move.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; padding-right: 4%; font-size: 19px;\">Novice language learners struggle with both fluency and comprehension, and understanding or producing isolated words doesn\u2019t feel like an accomplishment.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central theme here is that making progress in games is quick, while making progress with languages can be distressingly slow. \u00a0Despite this, there are still plenty of games that purport to teach languages. Generally speaking, the language learning content is shoehorned into a game framework, and people learn isolated words and phrases, verb conjugations, or rules about languages, but they don\u2019t actually learn to use those pieces to do anything.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language application designers would be far better served by thinking through how some of the elements that make games fun could be used in a language learning program with sound theoretical underpinnings, which incidentally, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/article\/people-love-games-but-does-gamification-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the approach that gaming experts recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the gamification of education in general. \u00a0For example, the competition that drives engagement in multi-player games could be used with tasks that actually drive proficiency gains. \u00a0Leaderboards, engagement challenges, and timed activities could promote the time-on-task necessary for language learning.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, because language is a tool we use to accomplish real things, game designers could build games that simply require that learners interact to solve compelling problems. \u00a0The number of people who\u2019ve learned English <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5332359\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by playing World of Warcraft and other multiplayer video games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is astonishing. \u00a0That game certainly wasn\u2019t built to teach English, but players make progress by using English, more evidence that a real-world need, that\u2019s relevant to learners\u2019 interests and goals, is a far more compelling way to teach a language <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/voxy.com\/es\/blog\/translation-doesnt-teach-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than translating nonsensical expressions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get fluency points.<\/span><span class=\"google\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now more than ever, the education industry is focused on \u201cgamification,\u201d or creating learning activities from games.
