Voxy is an entirely new way to learn a language that uses real topical news you actually care about. Voxy creates a fun and addictive learning experience across mobile and web platforms, so you can practice anytime, anywhere.
How can I improve my English with Voxy?
Voxy solves the two most important challenges in learning a language: practicing every day and staying interested. The most important part of learning a language is everyday practice, but the most difficult part of practicing everyday is staying interested. Voxy solves these challenges by using the news that you care about to create bite-sized lessons that you can use to practice anytime, anywhere.
Voxy also uses games and prizes to make learning fun and rewarding. This approach will ensure that you continue to learn something new and relevant every day.
Voxy’s 360̊ approach is designed to help you practice different language concepts anytime, anywhere by distributing bite-sized lessons across four channels: web, email, SMS, and smartphones. Each channel has individual strengths that make it useful for testing certain concept. For example, SMS news alerts are a perfect channel for news based vocabulary building, while email is a perfect channel for testing reading comprehension. Accessing Voxy across all four channels is the best way to take full advantage of Voxy’s 360̊ approach.
What learning theories support Voxy’s methodology?
Noam Chomsky, the father of modern linguistics, said that “perhaps 98% of the problem in teaching is to help the students get interested.” Voxy keeps learners interested by using personalized news they care about. Our pedagogy is based on Contextual Language Theory, which has demonstrated that a “learner’s interest” and “the richness of contextual clues” significantly accelerates learning. Voxy’s curriculum is built around Corpus Linguistics, the study of language in corpora or “real world” text. Our technology uses artificial intelligence to assess, track, and teach what you are exposed to as you read interesting news stories, and adapts to your progress, making learning both fun and effective.
What languages can I learn with Voxy?
At this time, Voxy only supports Spanish speakers learning English, but we are working to include support for speakers and learners of many other languages in the near future!

What do I have to pay for Voxy?
The basic version of Voxy is free! However, you may choose to pay a minimum monthly fee for a Premium account, which will give you access to additional tools and materials to accelerate your learning. Find out more about becoming a Premium Member.
Part of Voxy’s 360 Degree Approach is a text-message game designed to help you improve your vocabulary anytime, anywhere. If you subscribe to Voxy text messages, standard text messaging rates will be applied to your cell phone bill.
The Note of the Day is a daily news story that teaches you new vocabulary and tests your reading comprehension. Each note gives you the opportunity to learn new words, listen to the story and answer a quick question to assess whether you understood. Completing each note regularly will earn you points and accelerate your learning. Voxy’s three core note topics are News, Pop Culture and Sports. You can choose to have the Note of the Day sent to you via email as soon as it is published.
How do I learn new vocabulary?
Within each note and lesson, specified words are highlighted to help you understand the story. Click on the word to see the translation and hear the word pronounced in the language you are learning. When you click on a word, it is saved to your word bank for later review. These words, which are unique to your skills and interests, make up the foundation of the games and activities that Voxy offers to help you practice and learn faster.
You can also request Voxy SMS to learn new vocabulary through text message news alerts.
How do I know if I understood the story correctly?
In addition to the highlighted vocabulary, which provides context clues as to what the story is about, you can also click on “Take Quiz” in the right-side window to test your comprehension.
Your passport keeps track of your progress and accomplishments in Voxy. There are five activities that are reported in your passport: streaks, words, stories, points and stamps.
- Streaks measure how many consecutive days you have practiced.
- Words represent the number of vocabulary words you have collected.
- Stories represent the number of stories you have read and completed
- Points measure progress you have made in Voxy games and activities.
- Stamps are rewarded for a wide variety of accomplishments throughout Voxy, such as completing a Life Skills lesson, or progressing to a new skill level.
What can I do with my points? (and streaks, stories, words and stamps?)
Voxy rewards you for all your hard work in learning. The points, stamps and other achievements you collect while learning with Voxy can be redeemed for real-life rewards, such as prizes and discounts at some of your favorite brands.
Voxy points are earned in a variety of different ways, from playing games to inviting new members to join the community.
Voxy Life Skills are language courses that are based on everyday, real-life situations. Whether you are going to the bank, looking for a new job, visiting the doctor, or just shopping, Voxy Life Skills will give you the words you need to speak confidently.
Your Word Bank is the collection of all the words you have collected in Voxy and is the foundation for your Voxy games and activities. You can review translations and hear pronunciation of the words you have collected, as well as find the original stories that the word has appeared in.
Why do you recommend I give you my phone number?
Voxy’s text message news alerts and vocabulary lessons are a critical component to the Voxy 360̊ experience. By including your phone number in your Voxy profile, you will be able to access news alerts, vocabulary questions and other learning activities from anywhere at anytime. You can choose to stop receiving text messages at any time by visiting your Preferences page.
Can I suggest a story or a game?
Anytime you have an idea for how to improve Voxy, you can visit the Voxy Feedback Forum. Here you can submit ideas for stories, games and other activities you think will improve Voxy, as well as vote for other ideas. We want to design Voxy to meet your needs, so suggest often. The best ideas will be regularly incorporated into Voxy.
What should I do if the story is too easy or difficult?
After you have complete a story by taking the quiz, you will be asked whether the reading level of the story was too easy or too difficult. Voxy will use this information to adapt the difficulty of future stories to your skill level at any given moment in time. As you learn more and improve, you will get slightly more difficult stories that will offer more challenging vocabulary and language concepts.
How do I unsubscribe from emails or text messages?
We recommend you use email and text message lessons in order to facilitate everyday practice. However, you may opt out of these options by visiting your Preferences page and unchecking the option to receive email or SMS lessons. You may change these options at any time on your Preferences page.
